A Secret Plan Overlooking the Lake
Some of the best days in my career as a photographer start with a text message or email that reads something like: “I need your help – but he/she/they can’t know.”
That’s very similar to how this story began. A few weeks before a scorching July afternoon, I got an email from an excited soon-to-be-fiancé. He’d seen a previous blog post of mine which had inspired him to choose a cliff top lookout just outside Revelstoke – a spot with sweeping views of the Mountains and the turqoise lake below – as the place he’d ask the woman he loved to marry him. We coordinated all the details together: timing, hiking route, where I’d be with my camera, and how to make sure his partner, had absolutely no idea what was coming.
The Perfect July Day for a Mountain Proposal
Revelstoke in July is hard to beat. The trails are dry, the wildflowers are just starting, and the views stretch for miles. This particular hot summer afternoon was no exception – hazy light, warm air, and a gorgeously dramatic backdrop.
G had told S they were heading out for an afternoon hike & picnic. Little did she know, every step of that trail had been planned around the perfect moment at the end.
The Moment She Realized
I positioned myself in the area we had discussed with cameras primed and ready long before they arrived at the lookout. When they finally reached the cliff’s edge and G suggested they stood on the rock for a photo but then pulled out the ring and popped the question, S’s reaction said it all – hands over her mouth, tears, a moment of pure disbelief followed by pure joy.
That’s the magic of candid proposal photography: capturing genuine, unscripted emotion.
Celebrating with a Toast and a View
After she said yes (of course she did), the couple celebrated with a glass of wine right there on the cliff top, toasting to their new engagement with Revelstoke’s mountains as their witness.
From there, the newly engaged couple headed off for a romantic dinner in town to keep celebrating! Huge congratulations to both of you!
