Jazz is 15 1/2 and has a tumour on her leg. Rachel knows that the days ahead of her are inevitably growing shorter than the days behind, and so she asked me to take some photos of their special bond.
Rachel drove Jazz from Vancouver for our photo shoot. The weather was conspiring against us with drizzle and ugly brown snow due to the warmer temperatures. Not to be deterred, we headed to higher elevations in search of cleaner snow and the vain hope (we thought) of snow on the trees. This is where our luck changed! We found some sheltered spots where snow still clung to the trees. Jazz was in her element! She cavorted on her wobbly legs, chomped on clean, white snow and managed to shred a few sticks.
Jazz doesn’t have much hearing left so Rachel used her hands to communicate with her. Jazz has been the family pet for a lot of years and it was wonderful to see the bond between her and Rachel. They understood each other with just the smallest of movements.
We took our lead from Jazz as to when the shoot was over. She finally took a restful bed on the snow and relaxed before we headed back to our vehicles.
Thank you Rachel for allowing me to document the special bond between you and your beautiful girl Jazz.
