Bald Eagles & Coastal Wildlife in British Columbia
Spend time in one of British Columbia’s most remarkable coastal environments, photographing Bald Eagles and the rich variety of wildlife that gathers around the tidal waters of the Discovery Islands.
In late spring and early summer, strong tidal currents bring an abundance of small fish close to the surface. Bald Eagles gather along the rapids, creating an incredible opportunity to observe and photograph their natural behaviour – from soaring and calling to fishing, interacting and settling into the surrounding forest.
We’ll stay at a comfortable waterfront lodge just minutes from the main wildlife areas, giving us the flexibility to make the most of the conditions each day. We’ll work with the wildlife and the changing light, taking time to observe what is happening, anticipate behaviour, and photograph those moments as they naturally unfold.
When the tides are quieter, there is plenty more to explore. The surrounding waters are home to humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, sea lions, otters and a variety of seabirds, while the coastline itself offers beautiful opportunities for landscape and environmental photography.
Our approach is grounded in respect for the animals and their environment. We keep appropriate distances, follow local wildlife-viewing guidelines, and let the behaviour of the animals determine how we photograph them. The goal is to make strong images without interfering with the wildlife that makes this place so special.
Highlights
-
Bald Eagles in their natural environment — Spend time observing and photographing eagles as they feed, fly, interact and move through the coastal landscape. There are opportunities for both intimate portraits and wider images that tell the story of the place.
-
Tides, water and changing light — The powerful tidal currents create constantly changing patterns and conditions. We’ll explore different ways of photographing movement, water and wildlife as the light shifts throughout the day.
-
A rich coastal ecosystem — Keep your camera ready for humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, porpoises, otters and seabirds. Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed, but there is always something to watch for.
-
Time to slow down and observe — Wildlife photography is often as much about patience as it is about camera technique. We’ll spend time watching behaviour, learning to anticipate moments and making considered images rather than simply reacting to the action.
-
Guidance for all levels — Whether you’re new to wildlife photography or looking to refine your technique, there will be plenty of opportunity to work on autofocus, shutter speed, exposure, composition and working with changing light.
-
A deeper connection to the place — The aim is not simply to collect photographs, but to experience this remarkable coastal environment and create images that convey something of the wildlife, landscape and atmosphere of the Discovery Islands.
