A WINTER WORKSHOP IN THE CANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAINS
Winter transforms the Canadian Rockies: Frozen lakes, snow-covered peaks, waterfalls wrapped in ice, and the intricate patterns of ice cracks and bubbles. It’s a quieter time of year with fewer people and sunrises and sunsets that last longer than the summer months.
We’ll explore the Banff and Lake Louise area before travelling along the Icefields Parkway to Abraham Lake, there will be opportunities to photograph grand landscapes as well as the smaller details that make winter such a rewarding time to photograph.
This six-day photography workshop, offered through Akari Photo Tours, is designed around the conditions we find each day. We’ll make the most of early and late light, but we’ll also embrace the changing winter weather – snowfall, mist, cloud and storm light can all bring something special to the landscape. There will be time to work slowly, try different approaches and really explore our locations.
Abraham Lake is a highlight of the workshop, with its famous frozen bubbles, cracks, patterns and abstract details beneath the ice. We’ll spend time exploring the lake and looking beyond the obvious compositions, while the surrounding mountains provide opportunities for larger winter landscapes.
With a small group, there’s plenty of time for individual guidance and conversation in the field. We’ll talk through thought processes, composition, light and camera settings to help you realize your personal vision and connection to the landscape.
Transportation and double-occupancy lodging are included (single supplement is available), so once you arrive, you can leave the winter driving to us and focus on photography, the landscape, and enjoying the experience.
Our priority is simple: to spend time in some extraordinary winter landscapes, respond to whatever conditions the Rockies give us, and help you return home with a collection of images you’re really happy with.
